The essentials

Academic

Completion of secondary education (high school) or equivalent
Transcripts and graduation certificate
For some programmes: standardised test scores or an entrance examination
For Lakeland University Japan and US online courses: English proficiency evidence

Language

Japanese-taught programmes: typically JLPT N2 or above, or equivalent EJU score
English-taught programmes: TOEFL, IELTS or an equivalent assessment
Language school routes have lower entry requirements and build towards university entry

Evidence that tuition and living costs can be covered
Bank statements, sponsorship letter or scholarship documentation
Rough planning figures: tuition plus living costs vary widely by city and institution

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to speak Japanese to study in Japan?

Not always. English-taught programmes exist, including at Lakeland University Japan. However, learning Japanese — even to a basic level — makes daily life far easier and widens your options considerably.

How long does the application process take?

As a rough guide, allow six to twelve months from first consultation to arrival. Language school intakes typically happen in January, April, July and October; university intakes usually follow an April or September cycle. Starting early is always an advantage.

Can I work part-time while studying?

Students on a Japanese student visa can normally apply for permission to engage in part-time work, within limits set by immigration. We explain the current rules and how to apply during your pre-departure briefing.

I am not from China, Mongolia or the Philippines. Can you still help me?

Yes. Those are simply the countries where we have the deepest experience and the most established processes. We welcome students from anywhere, and we will be honest with you if a case falls outside what we can handle well.

What are the Lakeland University (US) online courses?

They are accredited American courses delivered online. XVALUE株式会社 is authorised by Lakeland University (US) to promote them across Asia. They suit students who want to begin American higher education from home, or who want to combine study with time in Japan.

How much does it cost?

Costs depend on the institution, the city and the length of your programme. We prepare an individual estimate covering tuition, housing, insurance and daily living so you and your family can plan properly.
